What's this blog all about?

"Board games? You play board games?" I hear you say... yes, but not unlike any board games you've probably ever heard of. Monopoly? Cluedo? Guess Who? Battleships? No, not by a long shot. One day someone introduced me to a great little game called "Carcassonne" - named after a French medieval town of rambling streets, walls and sections - where the aim is to score the most points using little random squares of road, walls and cities.
I was hooked and so began my, then our - the Bradshaw Tribe, adventure into Euro- and Ameritrash- gaming...

Breakthrough at Kiln! Memoir '44 star player Roshni wins again!

Breakthrough at Kiln - December 1941, after the German attack on Moscow had ground to a freezing halt, Russian forces tried to cut them off; in this scenario Roshni as the Germans had to break through the heavy defensive Russian lines to a frozen river in the south. They also had to make a feint to the left to draw Russian forces off, aware from the breakthrough.

The start, heavily entrenched Russians prepare to hold off the
German drive to the frozen river to the South

A push is made for the Russian trenches - badly hit Germans
still manage to force the Russians to retreat

Flee!! Out of the blinding snow, German tanks rumble on!

The German troops, biding their time, then push out
of the city ruins and charge the trenches

With the right hand Russian defences broken and the centre tank forces
destroyed, there is nothing stopping the German forces successfully making for
the river as History dictated.

Vive la France???

So this was it, another chance at a come back against Roshni and her German army in Memoir 44. She specifically asked for the Germans, and so she is now going to be Axis from now onwards.

This time was the turn of the Resistance against the Germans a few days after D-Day (And look how that turned out in my previous Memoir post!!) - the basic premise of the engagement being to repulse a German surge through the Bocage, taking on infantry and tanks using little more than 3 man groups scattered through the countryside. History said the French forced the Germans back to their starting positions at the end of the day, from the look in Roshnis eye, I could see this was going to be a whitewash!

Mid way through the game, German tanks push through the trees on the French left flank whilst a battered German left flank tries for a comeback in this Allied aerial reconnaissance photo.

A German counterattack by combined infantry and tanks wipe out a brave French unit (you can't see them because they were all taken out with one dice roll!!)
Vive la France!!!! French Resistance fighters make one final desperate charge from the trees!

Zut alors!! Crushing defeat on the French by the Germans! Another win to Roshni!!

History is changed!! Again!

So, I challenged Roshni to another game of Memoir '44 - seeing as the results so far were 2 - 0 to her! This time Maya got involved to see what was what. After a little bit of explanation of what the dice meant, Maya was able to pick up what was going on. The two of them shared dice rolls, which lead to be bit of excitement between them if one failed a hit, the other was encouraged to score. They also started to employ a lot of good tactics with their Command Card disadvantage.

So, the scene was set - my British forces hitting Sword beach 6th June 1944, which the girls vigorously defended. And defended they did!! It was terrible! No matter how I tried, I couldn't make head way; then about half way through, the right sector made a big push and things seemed to be going our way; one bunker was knocked out and the German artillery was forced to retreat but suddenly the left sector collapsed and the right sector took a sudden beating; then a Commando unit was wiped out and an Artillery Barrage card against a tank unit ended the British assault on Sword Beach!!

5 stars to my 1 - Roshni wins again

Memoir 44 is an amazingly simple game to play but is by no means simple in its approach - tactics, loss and wins, back and forth, I found it so much more playable than ASL. I cannot wait for Battlequestgames to open in town...more on this next post

Sword beach assault start Things not going well for the British! They think it's all over - it is now!
